Obituary of Don Roy Carns

Don Roy Carns, 83, of Norvelt, was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021. Born May 22, 1938, in Derry, he was the son of the late Fred and Florence Carns. Don is survived by his loving sister, Mazzie Kernicky; daughter, Carol Viazanko; and son, Greg (Terry) Carns. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Andrea Viazanko, Candice Lighthall, Christopher Avvampato, Tony Fox and Michael and Daniel Carns; along with five great-grandchildren, Ty, Jeremy, Lacey, Mason Lighthall and Grant Avvampato. Don was preceded in death by brother, Fred Carns; daughter, Amy Fox; granddaughter, Dana Bortz; and dear friend, Linda Mott. Don proudly served four years in the Navy as a jet mechanic on the U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard. He was a member of the Loyalhanna Lodge 275 and worked for West Penn Power for 35 years, retiring in 1996. His interests included working in the Jacktown Sawdust, Splinters Doghouse Wood Shop, golfing and spending time with family and friends. Don wished to thank all of his fantastic neighbors at Marigold Place, including Florence, Eddie, Jeanie, Bob and Debbie. He also expressed thanks for friends Wes, Lonna Dunn, Harry and Susan Weitzel. Don's family wishes to express their appreciation to all who provided exceptional care at Excela Westmoreland Hospital. Special thanks to all the hospice caregiving professionals at Westmoreland who compassionately cared for Don and his family. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, in the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, 2245 Mt. Pleasant Road, Norvelt, PA 15674, 724-423-3741. His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Trauger, with Pastor L. Samuel Scheiderer officiating. Everyone please go directly to the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 108 Dutch Hill Road, Latrobe, PA 15650.
