Obituary of Vaun C. Hile

Vaun C. Hile, age 87, died on Wednesday, March 22, 2023. Vaun was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, his parents Clay and Ethel, brother William, and twin infant grandsons Brandon and Logan Sherwood. He is survived by a sister, Margaret Stairs; three daughters, Barbara (David) Hall of Pittsburgh, Laura (Mark) Geckle of Webster, NY, and Lynda (Bradley) Sherwood of Lancaster, PA; his eight beloved grandchildren, Emily Hall (Kevin Miller), Rebecca (Benjamin) Ashton-Hall, John Hall, Joshua Geckle (Chloe Nagle), Sarah (Ryan) Flynn, Matthew Geckle, Andrew Sherwood, and Brian Sherwood; and he also has one great-grandchild on the way. Vaun worked as an electronics technician for Westinghouse (later PowerX) in Youngwood. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and sang in the choir. After retirement, he worked as a projectionist at the movie theater in Greensburg and volunteered as a gate guard at Latrobe Area Hospital. He spent many hours building and flying model airplanes with the Laurel Highlands Model Airplane Club. Vaun enjoyed spending time with his family and working in the yard, especially in his vegetable garden and the fruit orchard. He could build or fix anything. He also played the best “Winter Wonderland” on the piano. The family would like to thank the staff of Newhaven Court at Lindwood for their compassionate care of Vaun since 2017, and the staff of Bridges Hospice for their additional care in his final days. Visitation will be on Friday, March 31, 2023, from 3-7 p.m. at the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, 2245 Mt. Pleasant Road, Norvelt. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vaun’s memory to, St. Paul Lutheran Church, 108 Dutch Hill Rd, Latrobe, PA 15650. www.HofferFuneralHome.com.
